Dear McGruff House Applicant:

Thank you for your intrest in the McGruff House Program. Please complete the application and have each member of your household who is 18 years of age or older sign the statement giving permission for a confidential criminal history background check conducted by a law enforcement representative. This procedure provides an important measure of safety for the program. If you or an adult member of your household has a prior criminal history, you will not be accepted as a McGruff House participant.

What is a McGruff House? A McGruff House is a resource for children who find themselves in emergency or frightening situations, such as being bullied, followed or hurt. The program relies on participants who display the McGruff House sign in their windows 24 hours a day and are generally available to children in the area.

What do McGruff House Participants do? McGruff House participants make emergency phone calls for children in trouble and watch out for neighborhood children as they go to and from schools as well as when they are playing in the area. After receiving training, approved participants will be issued numbered McGruff House signs to be displayed in their windows.

What do McGruff participants not do? McGruff participants do not administer first aid or medication, act as a guard or escort service, enforce laws, provide toilet facilities, provide a place to “warm up” or “cool down”, provide food or beverages or guarantee safety. Participants are encouraged to keep the child near the front door and make the appropriate telephone call.

Who can participate? Anyone who is 18 years of age or older can volunteer by completing, signing and returning an application which includes permission for a criminal history background check. All applicants will be screened, and those who do not pass the background check will not be accepted into the program.
